What to Expect
We would love to worship with you at 10:00am on a Sunday morning!
Our worship follows a creative liturgy, which includes prayers of varying kinds (including silence), hymns (a cappella or accompanied by piano), a children’s story time, an inspiring sermon, special music offered by members of the congregation, and a warm time of sharing during Prayers of the People. Challenging ourselves to study and reflect on all scripture, not just the passages we prefer, we generally follow the Revised Common Lectionary.
Dress is casual and services last about 75 minutes. Childcare is provided for children in Kindergarten and younger. We provide bags of quiet toys for children who stay in the sanctuary for worship.
After worship you are warmly invited to join us in a time of Fellowship with good coffee, tea, and tasty, healthy refreshments. This time is followed by Adult Education Hour and Sunday School for children and youth. Some of us conclude the morning by going out to lunch together at one of the many excellent restaurants nearby.
First Mennonite Church of San Francisco would like all services to be accessible to those with chemical sensitivities. We ask that you please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, and scented products. This is also the policy of FMCSF’s host, Congregation Sha’ar Zahav.
If you are are interested in receiving the weekly email announcements, sent on Thursday morning, please contact Jessica Bigler Uhl, Administrative Coordinator, at info(at)menno(dot)org.
Education Hour
During the fall, winter, and spring, we offer Adult Education Hour and Sunday School classes for children and youth from Preschool (3-4 years) to High School (9th-12th grade).
Overseen by our Adult Faith Formation Committee, our Adult Education Hour is a lively time of study and conversation. During our annual fall Back to the Basics series and Lent, we usually have a series of classes directly related to worship. At other times the education hours comprise single topics of interest to the community. Recent series and topics have included Faith & Technology; Troubling Hymn Texts; Keeping a Healthy Relationship; and Drawing from our Mennonite Heritage in Troubling Times. Visitors are welcome!
Overseen by our Children & Youth Faith Formation Committee, our Sunday School classes are beloved of children and their parents alike! Our youngest children gather to sing, share a Bible story, and create an art response. Older children engage in topics such as Jesus and Jesus’ Followers; Food, Sustainable Living, and Justice; and The Challenge of Scripture. All Sunday School classes are activity based and include visual arts, singing, and /or storytelling. Sometimes the children or youth embark on field trips related to the topics they are studying.
Our practices:
- Facial coverings are optional for fully vaccinated individuals.
- Facial coverings are mandatory for unvaccinated adults when in the synagogue: during worship, fellowship, and while attending meetings. During fellowship please re-mask in-between bites and sips of food or drink.
- Proof of vaccination is not required – 100% of those responding to our regathering survey were fully vaccinated at the time, and we expect that vaccination rates are very high among those who did not respond.
- We invite people to practice asking for and giving consent in regard to distance and physical touch (hugs, etc.).
- We ventilate areas of gathering to the best of our ability.
- We ask those who are sick to please stay home.
- Will we continue to assess the local health situation and follow local health mandates
As we regather, we also want to remind people that we have a fragrance-free policy for all indoor gatherings.
