Mennonite Voluntary Service

Our Mennonite Voluntary Service (MVS) unit is located in the vibrant and funky Lower Haight neighborhood – a lively mix of homes, shops, parks, and restaurants. It’s an exciting place to experience the energy and diversity of city life.
The MVSers are welcomed into our congregation as they live out values of service, community and simplicity.
FMCSF church members take special care and initiative to invite MVSers into both congregational life and deeper community connections – an essential part of the San Francisco MVS experience.
Whether through music, teaching Sunday school, joining a small group or committee, engaging in activism, or attending social events, there are many ways to get involved and explore your gifts!

Volunteers are placed in local agencies whose missions align with FMCSF’s values, often addressing issues of housing, education, and health through a social justice lens.
They may support mothers and children, work with people on the street, or advocate for nonviolent change.
Placements typically include a combination of direct service and administrative support.
The MVS unit lives in a spacious top-floor flat of a Victorian-style home. Each volunteer has their own bedroom and the group shares a common living area, kitchen, and two bathrooms.
An organic garden and small patio are shared with the neighbors downstairs.

The house is close to public transportation and within walking distance of the church, parks, and congregation members’ homes.
Many MVSers also choose to stay in San Francisco after their term ends, and our congregation benefits greatly from their ongoing presence.
